U.S. Brig Niagara Offers Seamanship Training Friday April 7, 12:38 pm ET
HARRISBURG, Pa., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission will offer seamanship training aboard the U.S. Brig Niagara in Erie for three weeks beginning May 25. "This program is part of our effort to preserve historic seafaring skills," said PHMC Executive Director Barbara Franco. "It's a great opportunity for sailors to take advantage of a unique opportunity on the Niagara and to learn what life was like on a warship."
The ship was inspected and certified last July by the U.S. Coast Guard as a Sailing School Vessel, which allows it to offer educational sailing programs on a tuition basis.
Up to 20 people who are in good health and physical condition are eligible to join the program as sailing school trainees. They will sleep in hammock berths and learn to sail the ship, climb the rigging and live in an authentic setting with the ship's 16 professional crewmembers. Individual tuition is $950.00.
The U.S. Brig Niagara is owned by the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and managed by PHMC. It is operated with the help of the Flagship Niagara League Inc. Applications and detailed information are available at http://www.brigniagara.org.
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is the official history agency of Pennsylvania.
